Call of Duty League is set to kick off on Friday, January 24, in Minnesota where the Launch Week of 2020 CDL will be held. Entering the event, we will have all 12 teams, who will play two games each over the weekend, looking to pocket all 20 CDL points before the next competitive week in London.
Here we will look at the nine CDL fixtures, which will be played on Saturday and Sunday, and give our predictions on the outcome of the said bouts.
Day 2 – Saturday, January 25
New York Subliners vs London Royal Ravens
London Ravens will enter their opening CDL fixture of the season as heavy underdogs compared to the hyped-up New York Subliners, however, we can’t help but feel like the London outfit are severely underrated. Many see them as one of the weakest teams in the CDL, but there is a reason to believe they just might impress everyone. The team might not the star-studded roster such as Chicago, FaZe and Seattle, but we can’t overlook the talent and experience Ravens bring to the table. While London have little to no chance of winning the league, they should be more than capable of giving New York a run for their money.
Prediction: London Royal Ravens to win – 2.37 Bet365
Toronto Ultra vs Seattle Surge
Toronto Ultra looked solid in the scrim matches, yet it’s hard to imagine they will be moving mountains in the inaugural CDL season. The biggest concern with the team is their rotating 10-man roster which won’t do the team and their synergy any favors. We might see the team improve as the time goes on and they figure out the right mix of players, but seeing how their first match of the season will be against Surge, we simply can’t expect Toronto to win more than one map here.
Prediction: Seattle Surge -1.5 maps – 2.20 Bet365
Los Angeles Guerillas vs Florida Mutineers
Florida Mutineers have been regarded as one of the weakest teams heading into 2020, but they did not need long to prove the doubters otherwise. A lot of the team’s success will come down to Preston “Prestinni” Sanderson and his performances, however, he has a very solid support cast in Chance “Maux” Moncivaez and Colt “Havok” McLendon. As we see it the team is capable of great things, but whether they will be able to deliver on the big stage remains to be seen. Mutineers will have a tough match on day one, where they will meet with Seattle Surge, which will prove to be a real test for them, but as far as their meeting with LA Guerillas is concerned, we expect nothing less than a 3-1 win for the Florida outfit, possibly even a clean sweep.
Prediction: Florida Mutineers -1.5 maps – 1.83 Bet365
OpTic Gaming LA vs Paris Legion
OpTic hold some of the biggest CoD names in the scene, with a three-time world champion Brandon “Dashy” Otell, who got reunited with Brandon “Dashy” Otell, both of whom have had a great 2019 season. Despite that, however, we have some concerns with this team, seeing how they are only a shell of what the OpTic dynasty was. They might prove us wrong down the line, but as far as their chances to finish at the top of the league are concerned, we don’t have much hope in them. On a more positive note, OpTic should have a fairly easy time against Paris in game one, simply because Paris Legion are undoubtedly one of, if not the weakest team in the league. To see Paris come even close to winning here would be upset on its own. We don’t expect to see any miracles and neither should you.
Prediction: OpTic Gaming LA -1.5 maps – 2.00 Bet365
Atlanta FaZe vs Dallas Empire
Atlanta FaZe and Dallas Empire are arguably two of the strongest teams in the league and are set to lock horns on day two of the Launch Week. FaZe have been dominating the scrims and reportedly went on a massive winning streak, barely dropping a map out of almost 100 total maps they played and now they got a chance to translate that form into a LAN event. Dallas on the other side have been regarded as one of the best teams in scrims, however, we have seen them crumble to dust against Chicago on day one, where they got completely decimated, which once again proved LAN events are not the same as online matches.
The teams seem to be fairly equally matched, however, seeing how lost and unorganized Dallas looked like against Chicago on day one, we have to side with FaZe here. They should win this one and if Dallas won’t improve their performance from day one, we would not exclude a 3-1 win for FaZe.
Prediction: FaZe to win – 1.806 Pinnacle
Day 3 – Sunday, January 26
Paris Legion vs London Royal Ravens
There is not a lot to talk about for this match. Paris are seen as the weakest team in the league and the betting odds here fairly reflect that. We would like to see them prove everyone wrong, but solely based on the players they bring on the table, we can’t expect any spectacular moments from this team. Paris might do fine against Guerillas or another weak team, but when it comes to Royal Ravens, we have a hard time believing Paris can win more than one map.
Prediction: London Royal Ravens -1.5 maps – 1.83 Bet365
Chicago Huntsman vs OpTic Gaming LA
The OpTic Gaming versus OpTic Gaming clash, with Huntsman resembling the old OpTic more than OpTic themselves. As far as this match is concerned, we don’t believe OpTic have even the slightest chance of upsetting Chicago Huntsman. Seth “Scump” Abner and company are without a doubt one of the title contenders while OpTic still have a lot to prove before we can consider them a playoffs team. OpTic might have a chance to win one map here, but anything more is very unlikely, at least if Huntsman can keep up the tempo they have shown against Dallas.
Prediction: Chicago Huntsman -1.5 maps – 1.83 Bet365
New York Subliners vs Atlanta FaZe
It will be a tough week for NY Subliners, who have London and Atlanta on the menu. As we see it, NY can easily end the Launch Weekend 0-2, however, it will all come down to how well they can perform against London on day two. Subliners have signed the majority of old FaZe including Dillon “Attach” Price, Trei “Zer0” Morris and Thomas “ZooMaa” Paparatto. Will that be enough to derail the stacked lineup of McArthur “Cellium” Jovel, Michael “MajorManiak” Szymaniak, Preston “Priestahh” Greiner and the reigning world champions Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris and World Championship MVP Chris “Simp” Lehr? Very unlikely.
Considering how strong FaZe looked like in scrims, we expect great things from them and even through LAN events are a completely different environment, if FaZe can perform even half as good as they did online, they should have this one in the bag.
Prediction: Atlanta FaZe -1.5 maps – 1.80 Bet365
Toronto Ultra vs Minnesota RØKKR
The final game of the Launch Weekend will see Toronto Ultra take on the hosts Minnesota RØKKR in what promises to be an exciting match that should bring out the best out of both teams, as the result of this match could have significant ramifications on the league table. The odds on this match are spot in our books. RØKKR looked very solid against Surge and if they can enter this match with the same fire, they should have a fairly easy time defeating the visitors.
Prediction: Minnesota RØKKR -1.5 maps – 2.10 Bet365
